Match Report

Topped with an Irish Olympico, a disoriented Canadian start sprung anguish in supporters' hearts. But ߣߣƵ’s Women’s National Team drastically turned the tide, defeating the Republic of Ireland 3:1 on matchday two of the 2023 FIFA World Cup New Zealand.

The win puts Canada top of the group ahead of Nigeria and Australia — on one and three points, respectively — who face each other Thursday. More importantly, spectators, supporters and critics learned a vital lesson from today's match: It’s not about how you start but how you finish.

Ireland’s Katie McCabe scored an early inswinging corner kick that surprised Kailen Sheridan and the crowd at Perth Rectangular Stadium. But Canada, as they often do during tribulation, lifted their heads and put themselves back into the game.

Goal-scoring chances emerged for Canada as the dust from the disastrous start settled. Jordyn Huitema fired a warning shot when she let one fly from the top of the box in the 23rd minute. Moments later, set-piece specialist Jessie Fleming whipped in a dangerous freekick to Kadeisha Buchanan, whose header landed to centreback partner Vanessa Gilles at the top of the six-yard box. While Gilles' outstretched leg sent the ball over the crossbar, the message was well reciprocated — the equalizer was coming.

In the dying moments of the first half, the Irish suffered an unlucky goal. A curling cross from Grosso was miskicked on a clearance attempt from defender Meaghan Connoly.

While Connolly’s touch slightly altered the ball's direction, the pace of the cross, in conjunction with the after-effects from a brief period of rain, saw the ball skip off the grass and strike the post before bouncing into the net.

The second half saw a more composed and experienced side, resulting in a more composed and experienced performance. Team captain Christine Sinclair, Sophie Schmidt and Shelina Zardosky all entered the match at the break.

The immediate impact, alongside Bev Priestman’s halftime instructions, led Canada to score the go-ahead goal and complete the comeback.

Canadian midfielder Quinn found themselves under intense pressure in the Irish defensive third, but they were able to find a pass to Schmidt. Schmidt then swivelled away from an Irish defender and sent a splitting pass to Leon, who slotted her shot past Ireland’s number one Courtney Brosnan.

The rest of the half was more of the same. Canada had Ireland pinned in their half, not allowing the Irish time and space on the ball. While the Canadians didn’t add more tallies to the scoresheet, the two goals were enough to take them past Ireland and set their sights on competition hosts Australia when the two sides go face-to-face Monday at 6:00 a.m. EST.
